How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging that matches the loom build: crating is best for floor looms with frames, while boxed packing suits compact table looms and accessory kits.
- Stabilize moving parts before pickup. Secure the reed, heddles, treadles, and beams; remove shuttles and tools and pack them separately to prevent abrasion.
- If shipping loose on a skid, block and brace the base and add corner protection. Use shrink wrap plus banding so the castle and breast beam cannot shift.
- Note class sensitivity to packing. Properly crated or boxed units generally rate lower than loose, helping reduce LTL charges and damage exposure.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower damage risk on delicate textile components by crating, cutting claims and reship costs.
- Optimized packing can shift the shipment into a lower class within 85–125, improving freight rates.
- Clear part segregation (loom vs. accessories) speeds receiving, reduces handling time, and curbs miscounts.
- Accurate classification for hand looms increases quote accuracy, helping you plan budgets and transit timelines confidently.
