How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote at Class 85 and specify packaging (boxes or crates), piece count, and reed material (steel or stainless) to avoid reclass delays.
- Prevent bending: brace ends and add mid-span supports in crates; for boxed sets, add rigid tubes or angle protectors along the bundle edges.
- Moisture control matters for precision teeth—wrap with VCI paper or oil-treated kraft and cap sharp ends so they don’t pierce cartons.
- Mark handling clearly: “Keep Flat,” “Do Not Stack,” and length on labels; share longest reed length so carriers plan loading space.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 gives predictable LTL quotes and helps avoid density disputes and reclassification fees.
- Durable crating minimizes damage to delicate comb teeth, cutting claims and downtime for weaving lines or loom maintenance crews.
- Right-sized boxes or consolidated crates reduce cubic exposure and oversize charges, improving cost per set on regional routes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and keeps accessorials low for faster, simpler tendering.
