How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid, skidded crates with internal blocking to immobilize hoods and protect tank necks, brackets, and vents; fill voids with foam or corrugated pads.
- Drain and cap tank assemblies, bag openings, and mark orientation with “This Side Up.” Add corner protectors and “Do Not Fork Here” near thin panels.
- Rate and book as NMFC 131920, Class 100. Capture exterior crate length, width, height, and weight accurately on the BOL to prevent reclass fees.
- When shipping to farm dealers or job sites, request a liftgate and ensure fork openings are clear on two sides for safe handling and quick unloads.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 provides predictable LTL rating, reducing quote variance and speeding carrier selection.
- Crated protection cuts claim frequency on large, contoured parts, lowering replacement costs and downtime for ag equipment service.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat paperwork and fees, streamlining cross-dock handling and transit through multi-stop networks.
- Consistent NMFC usage supports bundled dealer replenishment and stronger negotiated rates with carriers on recurring lanes.
