How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize circular parts securely: nest rings and rims, band with edge protectors, add wood blocking or chocks to stop rolling, then stretch-wrap before boxing or crating.
- Isolate sharp flanges, wheel disks, wedges, and bead locks from other goods; cap bolt holes and cover edges with corrugated sleeves to prevent puncture damage.
- Label each package with specific components (rim clamps, hub flanges, felloes) plus piece count and gross weight; use orientation arrows and keep bundles tight for handling.
- Size packaging to the largest diameter; a 48x40 pallet suits many 24–28 in rims. Keep height under 48 in to fit LTL conveyors and minimize tip risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 rating removes density math, speeding quotes and avoiding costly reclass fees.
- Steel parts shipped in packages qualify for competitive LTL rates compared with bulk loose metal.
- Bundling rings, clamps, and wedges reduces terminal handling time, lowering accessorials like rewrap or labor charges.
- Clear component labeling streamlines receiving for ag dealers and OEMs, cutting dock time and reducing damage claims.
