How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify eligibility: unit must be a tractor (NOI) with a steam or internal combustion engine and no vehicle bed, bed frame, or fifth wheel.
- Prep the machine for transport: lower fuel to safe levels, disconnect the battery, cap fluid lines, and for steam units ensure the boiler is cool and dry.
- Secure like rolling machinery: chock wheels, use rated chains or straps at four points, protect edges and hydraulic lines; example—8,000 lb unit with four grade-70 chains.
- Document precisely on the BOL: list NMFC 132300 and Class 92.5, note make/model, running condition, removed attachments, and accurate dims/weight for LTL or volume quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing from a fixed Class 92.5—no density calculations, faster quotes, and tighter cost control.
- Lower reclass risk thanks to clear exclusions (no beds or fifth wheels), reducing surprise fees and dispute time.
- Simplified TMS setup: one NMFC for steam or internal combustion tractors streamlines rating rules and carrier routing.
- Broader carrier acceptance for non-hazardous machinery, improving capacity options and transit planning across LTL and volume lanes.
