How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Prepare the machine: drain fuel and oil, lock or fold handles, remove blades or fit blade rings, and cap any vents before boxing or crating.
- For crated shipments, bolt the base to a skid with four lag screws, block the engine head, and add 4-way forklift entry for safe terminal handling.
- For boxed units, use double-wall corrugate with wood runners, foam around the gearbox and throttle cable, and band to a pallet to prevent tip-over.
- Mark orientation and lift points clearly, include model/serial and dry weight on the BOL, and note “non-hazardous—no fuel” for quicker carrier intake.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduced damage and downtime by stabilizing the rotor and engine, lowering claims and replacement costs on high-value power trowels.
- Avoids reclass fees by matching NMFC wording—declare “boxed” or “crated” precisely and align packaging with documentation.
- Faster cross-dock moves with 4-way skids and labeled lift zones, cutting handling time and potential accessorials.
- Non-hazardous status enables simpler routing and fewer surcharges, helping maintain predictable LTL freight rates.
