How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship the barrel or mill empty: remove abrasive media, drain fluids, cap ports, and secure lids with locking pins or bands.
- Use a rigid pallet or steel cradle and block trunnions/rollers; for small rotary barrels, add cleats and banding, for larger mills use a welded skid with lift pockets.
- Mark center of gravity and approved lift points; coordinate forklifts with extensions or side-load access for long drums to prevent handling damage.
- Print “NMFC 132530 – Class 85” on the BOL, list piece count and serials, and note “machinery – non-haz” to streamline terminal check-in.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 enables predictable LTL quotes and simpler rate shopping across carriers.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and shortens booking and tender time.
- Purposeful blocking and crating reduce liner, gear-ring, and shell damage, cutting claim risk and downtime costs.
- Clear classification minimizes reclass fees and reweigh delays, improving on-time performance for maintenance and production schedules.
