How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 132565 on the BOL with the description “Turbochargers, internal combustion engine, boxed” and declare value for appropriate carrier liability; no hazmat fields are needed.
- Prepare each turbo by capping oil/coolant ports, bagging the unit to contain residual oil, and securing it in a double‑wall box with molded foam or 2" cushioning. Example: a 22 lb turbo in a 16x12x12 box with foam-in-place inserts.
- Palletize boxes on a 48x40 pallet, interlock up to four layers, add edge protectors and a top cap, then stretch‑wrap to the deck. Apply “This Side Up” to protect bearings and wastegate/actuator components.
- For reman/core programs, secure any attached actuators or brackets and keep loose hardware in sealed pouches inside the box. Include part numbers and RMA labels to streamline receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 rating avoids density disputes, lowering reclass fees and keeping LTL quotes predictable for metal-heavy turbo assemblies.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and shortens tender-to-pickup time, improving schedule reliability for service centers and OEM spares.
- Boxed packing meets standard handling expectations, reducing damage risk to center housings and turbine wheels and cutting claims-related downtime.
- Standardized pallet patterns and consistent cartons improve cube utilization, enabling better consolidation and more competitive freight rates across lanes.
