How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure the packed box or crate and total weight to calculate PCF; your density determines the freight class under NMFC 132680.
- Use sturdy boxes for household uprights and canisters; crate commercial or wheeled lawn vacuums and block wheels to prevent roll and fan damage.
- Empty dust bins and recovery tanks, remove loose bags, cap ports, and coil cords or hoses to avoid leaks and abrasion during LTL handling.
- Shipping only tools or attachments? Verify if they fall under item 132682 to prevent reclassification and rebills.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize density by nesting hoses and removing detachable tanks to hit a lower class and reduce LTL rates.
- Packaging in boxes or crates per Item 170 curbs inspection delays, claims risk, and unexpected reclass charges.
- Correctly separating attachments under the proper NMFC item streamlines audits and keeps invoices predictable.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and accelerates quotes, improving speed to dock and customer satisfaction.
