Notes
Note 132701: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment that the actual value per pound of the property does not exceed 35 cents. If the shipper fails to so certify the actual value per pound, sub 1 of the item will apply.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pre-sort by type: remove any lithium batteries from cordless models and empty dust bins; ship batteries separately under hazmat rules to keep the freight non-hazardous.
- Use sturdy gaylord boxes or palletized totes; bag dusty units and tape cords/hoses to the body. Top with a corrugated cap and band the pallet twice for stability.
- State the commodity precisely on the BOL: “Vacuum Cleaners, used—value for reconditioning/salvage only,” and include unit or pallet counts plus weight (e.g., 2 gaylords, 520 lb).
- Measure and photo-document each pallet (for example, 48 x 40 x 50 in) to prevent reweigh/reclass disputes and to help carriers plan cube and loading.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate “salvage-only” description minimizes reclassification fees and audit challenges, protecting margins on low-value cores.
- Consolidated packaging in gaylords reduces touches and damage, improving parts recovery rates for motors, housings, and usable accessories.
- Non-hazardous status (after battery removal) expands carrier options and can lower accessorial exposure, speeding transit selection.
- Clear dims and verified weights streamline quoting and billing, reducing unexpected charges and cycle time on LTL shipments.
