How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product fits the item: a household pumping plant with a 16‑gauge-or-thicker tank, motor, and pump shipped in a box, crate, or NMFC Package 1082. If the tank is thinner, do not use this classification.
- Cap suction/discharge ports, protect the pressure gauge and air valve, and immobilize the motor and pump with blocking or foam rings. Keep the tank upright to prevent shell dents and fitting damage.
- Choose packaging that meets NMFC: double-wall carton with corner posts and base tray, or a wooden crate fastened to a skid and strapped. Mark “This Side Up” and add tilt indicators for long LTL runs.
- On the BOL, state “NMFC 132840, Class 85, non-hazardous” and list the packaging type (box, crate, or Package 1082). If your configuration varies, review Note, item 132842, for any exceptions.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 (not density-based) delivers quick, accurate LTL quotes and fewer rating disputes.
- Lower reclass risk: meeting the 16‑gauge tank and approved packaging rules stops surprise rebills and chargebacks.
- Fewer damage claims: rigid crating, port caps, and upright handling protect motors, gauges, and tanks—keeping installer schedules on track.
- Simplified compliance: non-hazardous status and clear packing standards speed cross-dock handling and reduce special-handling fees.
