How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to the build: crate heavy or cast-metal wheels, box small paddles and hubs, and ship loose only when banded to a pallet with blocking to prevent roll.
- Measure the largest diameter and overall width, note any protruding shafts, and list package type (box, crate, or loose) on the BOL for accurate LTL planning.
- Protect surfaces and bearings: wrap paddles and rims, cap hubs, add VCI for steel, and use moisture barriers for wood components to resist transit humidity.
- Mark handling clearly: This Side Up and Do Not Stack where needed; use 4-way entry pallets and chocks—e.g., a 48" steel wheel in a 54" square crate with internal bracing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85–100 rating stabilizes quotes and helps avoid reclass fees for rotating machinery shipments.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and cuts time-to-tender, reducing admin and carrier compliance friction.
- Right-sized packaging (boxes, crates, secured loose) lowers damage rates on heavy rims and paddles, limiting claims and downtime.
- Accurate NMFC 132920 usage improves dock handling and can unlock better LTL machinery rates through consistent classification.
