How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure by the hub, not the blades; use a custom cradle or backer plate so no load rests on vane tips, then band to a 4-way pallet with no overhang.
- Protect machined surfaces with VCI wrap and desiccant, then add foam blocking that prevents movement; mark Do Not Stack and Do Not Tilt on all sides.
- Choose a closed crate for single precision wheels or a partitioned crate for multiples; photograph packing and record serial/part numbers for traceability.
- List NMFC 132960, Class 85 on the BOL; request air-ride or limited handling service for high-value builds and schedule pickup to avoid cross-dock delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass fees across carriers.
- Predictable LTL pricing supports planned releases of spare turbine wheels and consolidated crating without changing class.
- Proper hub-centric packing lowers damage and imbalance claims, protecting downstream assembly costs and delivery timelines.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and helps avoid accessorial surcharges tied to hazardous materials.
