How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and book under NMFC 132990 at Class 85. This is a fixed-class item, so no density calculation is needed for cylinders, guide cases, or runners.
- Package on a solid skid or in a wood crate with blocking and bracing. Cap openings, plug ports, and wrap any polished rods to prevent corrosion or impact damage.
- Keep long runners and guide cases supported along their length. Use edge protectors and steel or heavy poly banding to avoid bending and side loads during cross-dock transfers.
- List NMFC 132990 and Class 85 on the BOL and mark Non-Hazardous. For used parts, note drained and cleaned to prevent delays or misclassification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL costs thanks to a fixed Class 85, reducing rate volatility and simplifying budget forecasts for parts programs.
- Fewer reclass disputes since density is not required, which minimizes surprise fees and speeds carrier acceptance.
- Faster quoting and tendering for OEMs, dealers, and rebuilders moving cylinder assemblies, guide cases, and runners between plants and service centers.
- Lower damage risk with standardized crating and bracing, improving claim outcomes and keeping turnaround times tight for field repairs.
