How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm items fit scope: steel oil/fuel filter parts like brackets, cover plates, end caps, relief valve assemblies/housings, retainers, stems, tube guides, and check valve springs (not raw wire). Ship strictly in boxes.
- Pack with rigid corrugated cartons and cell dividers or foam for small machined pieces. Bag oily parts to stop seepage, cap threaded stems, and label each box with part numbers for easy receiving.
- Palletize with weight low in the carton, add edge protectors, and band to a 4‑way pallet. Keep fragile valve assemblies upright; e.g., 12 end caps per 18x12x10 box with foam sleeves.
- On the BOL, note “NMFC 133320, Class 70, non-hazardous.” No density needed. Avoid mixing with non-steel or fluid-filled filters, and list counts by sealed box.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density guesswork, preventing reclass fees and speeding rate quotes.
- Box-only presentation reduces handling damage on precision faces and mitigates OS&D claims.
- Batching parts by family improves cartonization and can lower minimum charge weight exposure.
- Non-hazmat engine components qualify for broad LTL carrier coverage, improving lane options and driving down bid rates.
