How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL: “Magnesium metal or magnesium alloys, angles/beams/bars/rods, NOI, in packages — NMFC 133620, Class 70.” Ensure the class is clearly displayed for rating.
- Bundle long products tightly with edge protectors and steel or poly banding; cap sharp ends and add moisture barrier or VCI wrap. Use full-length pallets with three or more runners to prevent bowing.
- Keep pallet weights LTL-friendly (commonly under 4,000 lb), mark piece counts and alloy designations, and use “Do Not Stack” cones unless crated and stack-rated.
- Separate solid shapes from chips or turnings, which classify differently and may be hazardous. Photograph packaged bundles before tender to minimize OS&D disputes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 70 provides predictable, competitive LTL pricing without density calculations, speeding quotes and audits.
- Non-hazardous solids eliminate hazmat surcharges and reduce carrier restrictions, expanding lane options.
- Properly bundled packages cut abrasion and bending damage, lowering claims and rework costs.
- Magnesium’s high strength-to-weight ratio can reduce weight-based charges versus steel, improving landed cost.
