How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the commodity as “magnesium metal buffings or grindings” on the BOL and include NMFC 133720 to prevent reclass or inspection delays.
- Use sift‑proof packaging: sealed steel or plastic drums with tight lids, or heavy corrugated boxes with 4–6 mil poly liners. Example: 55‑gal drums banded and shrink‑wrapped on pallets.
- Keep material dry and contained to avoid fines escaping. Add liners, lid gaskets, and stretch wrap; avoid open-top gaylords without a secure cover.
- Load away from liquids and powders that could contaminate the scrap. Mark pallets “Keep Dry” and ensure pallets are sturdy enough for dense metal residues.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single NMFC listing streamlines rating and documentation—no density-based class math, enabling faster quotes and fewer billing disputes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps avoid special handling fees, improving lane coverage and scheduling flexibility.
- Tight, sift-proof packaging reduces cleanup and loss claims, protecting margins and minimizing OS&D exceptions at terminals.
- Palletized, closed containers speed cross-dock handling and reduce inspection holds, improving transit reliability and total landed cost.
