How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State NMFC 134160 and Class 85 on the BOL, and list each arm’s length, bracket type, and whether mast arm supports are included; bag small hardware inside the same package.
- Protect the anodized/aluminum finish: cap threaded or open ends, pad mounting points, use foam wrap with stretch film, and band bundles in three spots to rigid runners to limit flex.
- For long pieces (8–20 ft), book carriers that accept overlength freight; mark lift points and add “Do Not Fork” across the span to prevent mid-arm punctures or bends.
- When pallets don’t fit the length, ship as bundled packages with corner/edge boards; keep overhang minimal, label ends high‑visibility, and photograph packaging before tender.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass fees for municipal and contractor lighting projects.
- “Packages” eligibility keeps material costs down versus mandatory crating while still meeting carrier handling expectations for long aluminum arms.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines compliance and avoids hazmat surcharges, accelerating tendering and dock throughput.
- Clear length/support details help avoid surprise overlength and OS&D claims, protecting schedules for DOT, utility, and EPC installations.
