How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the hazmat identity before booking: use the proper shipping name and UN number (e.g., UN 1944 Safety Matches or UN 1331 strike-anywhere) per 49 CFR, and apply Class 4.1 labels.
- Pack retail units into sturdy corrugated boxes with partitions or padding to limit friction on match heads; overpack in UN-rated fiberboard when required by your DOT packing instruction.
- Mark and document clearly: list NMFC 134200, Class 77.5, the hazmat UN/Proper Shipping Name, and a 24-hour emergency contact on the BOL. Add Limited Quantity markings if eligible.
- Choose an LTL carrier authorized for Class 4.1. Keep pallets away from heat sources, segregate from oxidizers, and use corner boards and tight stretch wrap to prevent crushing or abrasion.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single fixed class (77.5) speeds quoting and reduces reclass disputes, giving predictable landed costs for each carton of matches.
- Accurate hazmat setup prevents carrier penalties and terminal delays, keeping replenishment cycles tight for retail and hospitality buyers.
- Boxed configuration consolidates many small retail packs into master cartons, lowering handling time and damages from friction or compression.
- Selecting Class 4.1–capable carriers with negotiated hazmat surcharges stabilizes rates and improves on-time performance for seasonal demand spikes.
