How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as NMFC 134320, Class 55, and note packaging as “bags”; palletize (e.g., 40x48 inches) and stretch wrap for unitized handling.
- Use moisture-resistant bags or poly liners and add a top sheet; rapeseed meal absorbs humidity, so keep pallets off floors and away from condensation.
- Stack bags in interlocked or column pattern with slip sheets; avoid crushing by capping pallet weight (e.g., around 2,000 lb) and using corner boards.
- Request clean, odor-free equipment when shipping for feed use; avoid co-loading with chemicals or strong-smelling freight and clearly mark non-hazardous.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 delivers predictable, often lower LTL rates versus higher classes, improving landed cost on feed-grade commodities.
- Simple, non-density-based classification reduces reweigh/reclass disputes and speeds up quoting and tendering.
- Bagged format enables tight pallet cube and stable stacks, lowering handling risk and potential damage claims.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, cutting paperwork and transit delays.
