Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
13450.00 Footwalks, Walkways or Gratings, with or without handrails or interlocking bridges, in packages, see Note, item 13451:

Notes

Note 13451: NOTE-Articles tendered for shipment on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must be securely fastened to and must not overhang the edges of the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck. Exposed surfaces and edges must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials so as to withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Bundle or crate aluminum walkways and gratings as packages; use edge protectors, non-marring dunnage, and cap rail ends to prevent abrasion or puncture.
  2. Record true overall dimensions, including handrails and interlocking bridge hardware; list packaged length, width, and stacked height on the BOL with NMFC 13450.
  3. Secure packages to skids with cross-banding and blocking so panels cannot slide; add slip sheets between gratings to stop metal-on-metal scuffing.
  4. Reference Note, item 13451 for any exceptions or configurations; label packages “Aluminum Walkway/Grating—Packaged” to avoid steel miscodes at terminals.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Clear NMFC 13450 reference reduces reclass disputes and keeps quotes consistent across LTL carriers.
  • Non-hazardous aluminum simplifies routing and avoids hazmat surcharges for job-site and plant deliveries.
  • Packaging as “in packages” aligns with carrier handling rules, cutting OS&D claims and special-handling fees.
  • Using the Aluminum Group item prevents mix-ups with steel grating codes, minimizing delays and chargebacks.
