How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 134600 on the BOL and clearly mark “For Animal Consumption Only”; reference Note, item 134602 when applicable.
- Book refrigerated LTL and specify a temperature setpoint (e.g., 28–34°F chilled or 0°F frozen) plus continuous-run reefer instructions.
- Use leak‑resistant liners and sealed pails/totes; add absorbent pads, overpack in sturdy cartons, and stretch‑wrap to a 48x40 pallet with corner boards.
- Prevent cross‑contamination: segregate from human food loads, request clean trailers, and include a temperature recorder for chain‑of‑custody.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies rating and reduces reclass fees, giving predictable LTL quotes for perishable animal meats.
- Correct labeling and documentation lower refusal risk at renderers, pet food plants, and zoos, cutting delays and accessorials.
- Leak‑proof packaging minimizes cleanup and odor claims, protecting margins and carrier relationships.
- Reefer LTL consolidation enables cost‑effective moves of partial pallets or mixed lots versus booking full truckload capacity.
