How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm eligibility: product is cooked, cured, dried, dry salted, pickled, smoked, or otherwise preserved—and shipped non-frozen. Frozen items use different NMFC notes.
  2. Pack in rigid corrugated boxes or approved packages; line with food-safe plastic and seal seams to prevent brine or fat seepage. Close fully per Item 170 to avoid reclass.
  3. Weigh each handling unit and determine total cubic feet to calculate density, then select the class for NMFC 134720 accordingly. Note density on the BOL to support rating.
  4. Separate from odor-sensitive freight (coffee, spices) and avoid prolonged heat exposure during cross-docks. Request standard, non-refrigerated service unless quality specs require otherwise.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based rating rewards compact, tight packaging, often lowering class and LTL charges when cube is minimized.
  • Non-hazardous designation expands carrier options and reduces accessorial hurdles, speeding tender and pickup windows.
  • Using sturdy boxes/approved packages cuts leakage claims and reclass fees by aligning with Item 170 closure and strength rules.
  • Clear NMFC alignment reduces inspections and rebills, improving delivered cost predictability for repeat food distribution lanes.
