How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rigid corrugated boxes with wood or foam blocking so dense bars and pigs cannot shift; add edge protectors and interior banding for heavy bundles.
- For sheets, interleave kraft paper or poly to prevent scuffing, then strap stacks inside the box to keep corners flat and edges protected.
- Palletize boxed freight with no overhang, add a top cap, and secure with two perpendicular bands plus stretch wrap to stabilize the load.
- Mark boxes with piece count, alloy name, and HEAVY when applicable; put “NMFC 135420 – Class 70” on the BOL to avoid reclass or disputes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 eliminates density calculations, giving predictable rating and fewer billing audits for metal shipments.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier availability and avoids hazmat fees, keeping LTL costs in check.
- Boxed presentation aligns with most terminal handling rules, reducing damage claims on brittle sheet edges and heavy pig bundles.
- Ideal for foundries and tableware or casting shops—consistent class simplifies multi-stop planning and consolidated pickups.
