Classification Details
| NMFC | Description | Class |
|---|---|---|
| 135460.00 | Blanks, britannia metal, NOI, see Note, item 135461, in boxes, having a density of 12 pounds or greater per cubic foot, see Note, item 135462 | 85 |
Notes
Note 135461: NOTE-Applies only on articles manufactured solely by a blanking process.
Note 135462: NOTE-Density must be shown by shipper on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment. If density is not shown and shipment is inadvertently accepted, class will initially be assessed under the provisions of item 135340, naming 'Antimony, Britannia, Pewter or White Metalware, NOI.' Upon satisfactory proof of actual density, class will be adjusted accordingly.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm density meets the threshold: weigh each box and divide by its cubic feet; e.g., 40 lb in 2.5 cu ft = 16 pcf, which qualifies for Class 85.
- Use abrasion control inside boxes—sleeves, paper interleaves, or foam—to protect the soft britannia alloy from rub marks and edge dings.
- Palletize tightly with no overhang; strap and stretch-wrap boxes, add corner boards, and place a ‘Do Not Crush’ top sheet to prevent warping of blanks.
- State on the BOL: “Britannia metal blanks, boxed, ≥12 pcf, NMFC 135460, Class 85,” and include accurate piece counts and total weight.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating for qualifying density keeps LTL quotes consistent and helps avoid unexpected reclass charges.
- Non-hazardous commodity streamlines compliance and typically reduces accessorial exposure tied to hazmat handling.
- Boxed-only packaging aligns with carrier best practices, lowering risk of surface damage and claim costs on soft alloy blanks.
- Packing to 12+ pcf optimizes cube, improves trailer utilization, and can yield better freight rates versus lower-density configurations.
