How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and book at fixed Class 100: select “Chrome aluminum, NMFC 135580” and mark packaging as boxed or drum-packed to prevent carrier reclass.
- Palletize boxes tightly—interlock layers, add corner boards, and wrap to the skid; place a moisture barrier sheet on top to avoid staining in humid lanes.
- For drums, band each to the pallet with two steel straps, use drum rings and chocks, and ensure bungs are capped; a common pattern is four drums on a 48x40 pallet.
- Document clearly on the BOL: include alloy or lot IDs, gross and tare per package, and label as Non-Hazmat to streamline terminal handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a single class—no density calculations, faster rate shopping.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and specialized handling costs.
- Choice of boxes or drums aligns protection to product form, reducing damage claims.
- Accurate NMFC wording minimizes reclass risk, preventing invoice surprises and delays.
