How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize flat stacks with full-length skids so sheets or plates are supported edge to edge; add dunnage every 18–24 inches to prevent sag on longer lengths.
- Use corner boards and edge guards, then band with polyester or steel strapping placed on dunnage, not raw edges, to avoid crush marks and sharp-edge damage.
- Interleave sheets with paper or poly film to limit abrasion; stretch-wrap to keep bundles clean and add desiccant if moisture exposure or long transit is likely.
- Mark bundles with piece count, alloy/tempers if known, and “Do Not Fork Under Straps”; for thin-gauge stacks, add cones or stickers to deter top-stacking.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous aluminum lowers compliance burden and eliminates hazmat fees, improving landed cost predictability.
- Flat, uniform bundles cube efficiently on standard pallets, reducing reweigh/reclass risk and helping carriers optimize trailer space for better rates.
- Clear NOI description streamlines quoting and tendering, speeding up LTL bookings and reducing back-and-forth with carrier rules clerks.
- Damage-mitigating packaging (edge guards, interleaving, proper banding) cuts claim rates and scrap losses, protecting margins on high-value aluminum.
