How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to the rule: ship sheet, strip, or tubing in sturdy boxes, and send wire on spools or coils in sealed packages with straps or stretch wrap.
- Protect high-value edges and surfaces: add VCI paper or oil for corrosion control, use edge guards on strip/sheet, and cap tubing ends to prevent dents and contamination.
- Mark clearly for rating: label cartons or packages with “NMFC 135782 – Class 100,” list count and alloy type, and include a packing list on the lead box or package.
- Palletize for LTL efficiency: place boxed alloys or packaged wire on a skid, block and band to the pallet, and avoid loose bundles that could trigger reclass or damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 (non‑density) helps you quote LTL quickly and reduces reclass disputes for mixed alloy forms.
- Lower compliance overhead: non‑hazardous status widens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees or documentation complexity.
- Fewer damage claims: box/package requirement plus corrosion and edge protection minimize OS&D events on precision alloys.
- Operational clarity: NOI coverage for sheet, strip, tubing, and wire streamlines SKUs under one code, simplifying rating and audits.
