How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 135930 and Class 70 on the BOL to prevent reclass, and specify “manganese-silicon alloy in drums” for clarity.
- Palletize drums securely: use 48x40 pallets, drum rings or banding, and corner boards; two 55-gal drums per pallet is a common, stable configuration.
- Keep contents dry and contained; if material is granular or dusty, add liners and tight-head closures to avoid spillage and moisture pickup.
- Quote by total weight without density math (fixed Class 70). Example: 4 drums x 850 lb on two pallets, NMFC 135930, non-hazmat.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 removes density disputes and reduces the risk of reclass fees.
- Faster tendering: non-hazardous alloy in drums avoids hazmat paperwork and placarding, speeding pickups and linehaul.
- Lower claims exposure: drum packaging plus proper banding minimizes loss, contamination, and cleanup costs.
- Cleaner audits: a precise NMFC (135930) and clear drum count streamline carrier inspections and billing.
