Classification Details
| NMFC | Description | Class |

How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “non‑ferrous residue for re‑melting” with NMFC 136060 and confirm tin content does not exceed 50% on the BOL.
- Use rugged boxes or sealed drums; line containers to capture fines and strap to pallets. Example: four 55‑gal steel drums, banded and palletized.
- Distribute weight evenly and note high density for liftgate or forklift planning; avoid mixing with ferrous scrap to prevent misclassification.
- Provide destination type (foundry, smelter, recycler) and basic composition notes (copper/lead/tin mix) to speed inspections and reduce delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55 pricing rewards dense scrap, often lowering LTL rates compared to higher classes.
- Fixed class (no density calculation) enables faster quoting, fewer reclass fees, and cleaner audits.
- Non‑hazardous status avoids HazMat surcharges and simplifies carrier selection and transit planning.
- Clear remelting designation improves acceptance at smelters, cutting detention time and handling costs.
