How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package antimony scrap in rigid boxes or crates, banded to pallets with steel strapping. Line containers to capture fines and blunt sharp edges, then stretch-wrap to prevent loss in transit.
- List the exact description on the BOL: "Scrap, antimony metal, in packages" with NMFC 136100, Class 60. Include package count, pallet quantity, and net weight, and mark as non-hazardous.
- Keep loads dense with a low center of gravity. Use edge protectors, avoid pallet overhang, cap stack height to carrier guidelines, and add blocking/bracing for intermodal moves.
- Separate from other scrap grades and keep dry, clean, and free of dirt, wood, or plastic to protect melt value and avoid delays or rejections at receivers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 yields predictable LTL rating and often lower metal-scrap freight costs versus higher classes.
- Non-hazardous status removes hazmat paperwork and fees, simplifying scheduling and expanding carrier options.
- Correct NMFC 136100 on paperwork speeds quoting, reduces reclass disputes, and minimizes inspection-driven delays.
- Tight, banded packaging limits loss of fines and dock cleanup charges, lowering claim risk and preserving scrap value for smelters and refiners.
