How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as Scrap, NOI, cadmium, apply NMFC 136140 at Class 85, and choose boxes as the packaging on the BOL.
- Use heavy corrugated or steel-lined boxes with poly liners and sealed lids to contain fines; palletize and band tightly to prevent shifting. Example: 2 pallets, 4 lined boxes each, 1,800 lb total.
- Prevent moisture and cross-contamination: line boxes, cap or bag smaller pieces, and keep different alloy grades or sources separated.
- If shipping in bags or drums, confirm your carrier will accept those packages under this NMFC and record piece counts and weights per package.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 85 is fixed, so quotes are straightforward and reclass risk is lower than density-based scrap.
- Proper boxing reduces spill clean-up, damage claims, and extra handling fees, improving margins.
- Non-hazmat status avoids hazardous surcharges and broadens carrier choices for LTL lanes.
- Clear NMFC mapping streamlines recycling programs and helps lock in predictable, repeatable freight rates.
