How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package scrap securely in closed containers (steel or fiber drums, Gaylord boxes with liners) and band to pallets to contain fines and prevent loss.
- List the commodity as “Scrap, white metal alloy, NOI, in packages” with NMFC 136200 and Class 55 on the BOL; avoid mixing in other metal grades.
- Provide accurate piece counts and weights per package; note moisture or oil residues, and add photos at pickup to streamline carrier inspection.
- Example: Ship babbitt-bearing turnings in lined drums, each labeled, then shrink-wrap and strap two drums per 48×40 pallet for LTL handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55 typically delivers favorable LTL rates for dense packaged scrap, improving margin on backhaul and routine recycler lanes.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and extra paperwork, shortening tender-to-pickup time.
- Simple, fixed classification reduces reclass risk, minimizing disputes, delays, and unexpected inspection fees.
- Proper packaging decreases material loss and claims, preserving scrap value and meeting smelter intake requirements.
