How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize closed-head drums and band them securely; use 4-way entry pallets so forklifts can handle heavy alloy drums safely. Example: two 55-gal drums per pallet with top boards.
- Prevent contamination and moisture by using drum liners or desiccant and verifying tight bungs. Wipe drum exteriors clean—carriers may refuse drums with residue.
- State on the BOL: “Silicon Copper, in drums — NMFC 136260, Class 70.” List drum count and weight per drum; no density data is required for this fixed class.
- Avoid stacking unless drums are rated for it; add corner boards and anti-slip mats. Request liftgate or drum truck service if shipping to sites without a dock.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 eliminates density disputes, reducing reclass fees and producing predictable LTL quotes.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options for faster tendering.
- Drum packaging speeds cross-dock handling and lowers leakage or contamination claims, cutting OS&D costs.
- Falls under the Metals Group, often aligning with carrier metal tariffs and enabling alloy shipment consolidation for better lane pricing.
