How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm alloy content excludes gold, palladium, or silver to remain under this NMFC entry; note this clearly on the BOL to avoid reclass.
- Pack rods, bars, or wire spools in sturdy corrugated boxes with dividers or molded trays, and line interiors to prevent abrasion and metal dust.
- Palletize boxed cases on standard 40x48 pallets, no overhang; add corner boards and stretch wrap, then label NMFC 136430, Class 60, piece count, and weight.
- Provide dimensions and weight for rating even though class is fixed at 60; example: 8 boxed spools, 900 lb total on 1 pallet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and helps control LTL spend compared to higher-class metal items.
- Non-hazardous designation reduces accessorial risk and avoids hazmat documentation or carrier restrictions.
- Boxed packaging improves stackability and cube efficiency, cutting damage claims and optimizing trailer utilization.
- Clear NMFC/BOL descriptions prevent reclass and rebills, keeping margins predictable for repeat shipments.
