How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe the commodity precisely: “type metal alloy, not printers’ type,” and note form (ingots, pigs, shot, pieces) so carriers know it’s bulk alloy, not finished type blocks.
- Pack small pieces or shot in heavy poly bags inside stout cartons or crates to contain fines; line boxes to prevent lead dust from escaping during transit.
- Build forklift-ready pallets: 48x40 four-way pallets, low center of gravity, steel banding with corner protectors, and a top cap to keep straps from biting into cartons.
- Provide dimensions and weight per handling unit on the BOL; note “non-hazardous lead-based alloy” and avoid co-loading with food items to meet common carrier policies.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear identification as bulk type metal avoids misclassification with printers’ type, reducing reclass fees and shipment holds.
- Dense packaged alloys often rate favorably when weights and dims are accurate, improving LTL freight costs and quote consistency.
- Robust containment of chips and fines cuts cleanup risks and damage claims, preserving delivery timelines and customer confidence.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier options, simplifying scheduling and network routing.
