Note 136612: NOTE-Does not apply on alloys containing gold, silver, palladium or platinum.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State NMFC 136610 on the BOL and describe the pieces as “white metal alloys — bars/pigs/slabs — packaged,” including piece count and pallet count; no density is needed for classing.
- Palletize heavy, soft alloys (e.g., babbitt or tin‑based bars) with 4‑way entry skids, corner/edge protectors, and tight steel or poly banding; add a top cap to prevent strap marks.
- Contain short bars or pigs with stretch wrap and blocking so nothing rolls; example: 2,200 lb slab stack on a 48x40 pallet, slip sheets between layers, banded twice lengthwise and crosswise.
- Keep bundles dry and clean to prevent staining; use plastic sheeting or VCI paper if humidity is a concern. Apply “Do Not Stack” or “Heavy” labels when surface damage or crush is a risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 pricing streamlines quoting and typically lowers LTL costs for dense alloy stock compared to higher classes.
- Non‑hazardous status sidesteps hazmat fees and carrier restrictions, speeding tendering and reducing accessorial risk.
- Robust pallet/bundle prep reduces claims for scuffing or deformation, protecting margins and customer satisfaction on precision alloys.
- Clear item usage (bars/pigs/slabs in packages) minimizes reclass charges and inspection delays, improving on‑time performance and budgeting.
