How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity on the BOL as “Zirconium–Manganese–Silicon Alloy, NMFC 136650, Class 60” and select “boxed” as the packaging type to match the tariff.
- Use double- or triple-wall corrugated boxes with a plastic liner to contain fines or granules, then secure cartons to pallets with bands and full stretch wrap.
- Keep weight centered and avoid pallet overhang; follow carrier pallet weight limits (many LTL networks cap single pallets near 2,000 lb) to prevent damage or refusals.
- Mark cartons with Heavy and This Side Up labels, add edge protectors, and ensure forklift entry is clear so dense boxes are handled safely on the dock.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 60 rating for boxed metals drives lower LTL rates compared with higher classes, improving landed cost on recurring alloy shipments.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines documentation and reduces accessorial exposure, helping speed tender-to-pickup and avoid hazmat fees.
- Single-class, non-density NMFC entry cuts reclass risk and simplifies quoting, even when box sizes vary between production runs.
- Standardized box packaging reduces leakage and contamination claims, protecting margins for foundries, casthouses, and alloy distributors.
