How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify meter type and material mix (electric revenue meters, water/flow meters, brass bodies, glass faces, electronics) and note any calibration sensitivity.
- Package by vulnerability: double-wall cartons with foam for glass dials, anti-static bags for electronic modules, and cap or plug flanged or threaded ends.
- Palletize cartonized units on 48x40 with no overhang; band and wrap, place heavier cast bodies low, and add tilt/shock indicators for calibrated units.
- Mark paperwork as NMFC 136700 “Meters, or Parts Named, Group,” list piece count and serials, and include accurate weight and dimensions to speed LTL quotes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Minimize reclass and re-rate risk by clearly citing the group item and non-hazardous status on BOL and labels.
- Cut damage and claims with meter-specific packing methods—capped ports, foam suspension, and anti-static protection for registers and sensor modules.
- Accelerate quoting and tendering when carriers see standard pallet footprints, clear counts, and documented sensitivities.
- Lower OS&D and handling costs by separating fragile registers from heavy cast housings and securing each pack for predictable transit.
