How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item fits 137590: completed models or sets in boxes or crates (not model kits of parts). If anatomical models are involved, review Note for Item 137591; kits may fall under Item 137592.
- Measure and weigh to determine density for Item 170. Example: 24×18×12 in carton at 30 lb = 3.0 cu ft and 10 pcf; select the class that matches that density tier.
- Package to the subtype: crate plaster architectural pieces with rigid foam corners and brace fragile edges; use dividers and trays for airplane ID sets; secure flying model airplanes so wings, spars, and hulls cannot shift.
- Document clearly on the BOL: piece count, packaging (box or crate), NMFC 137590, and calculated density. Mark “Fragile—Models.” If any battery packs are included, ship them separately to avoid compliance issues.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-driven pricing means right-sizing cartons and nesting components can raise pcf and reduce the freight class, lowering LTL rates.
- Crating fragile plaster architectural models sharply cuts damage risk, avoiding claim costs and reinspection-related delays.
- Accurate paperwork for this item’s thirteen density tiers prevents carrier reclass fees and surprise adjustments.
- Clear separation of models from kits (per notes) minimizes disputes, leading to faster quotes and cleaner invoicing.
