Notes
Note 137702: NOTE-Applies only on moldings in straight lengths of uniform cross-sectional dimensions.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the molding material (wood, PVC, MDF, aluminum) and profile type, then consult Note 137702 to select the correct NMFC subclass—don’t assume a default class.
- Bundle long, slender pieces by like material, add rigid corner/edge protectors and end caps, shrink-wrap, then strap to a full-length skid to prevent bowing.
- For 8–16 ft lengths, plan for overlength handling; label “Do Not Fork Mid‑Span” and book carriers that accommodate long freight or side-loading.
- On the BOL, list “NMFC 137700 — see Note 137702,” include piece count, longest length, and packaging description; add photos to reduce claim disputes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Note-driven classification minimizes reclass fees and shortens dispute cycles, improving quote accuracy for molding shipments.
- Robust long-goods packaging reduces damage and finish defects, cutting claim costs on high-value architectural trim.
- Detailed BOL and length data help avoid surprise overlength accessorials and align freight with suitable carrier equipment.
- Non-hazardous designation expands carrier options, supporting competitive LTL rates for bundled molding profiles.
