How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to length: use sturdy boxes for short trim pieces and wood crates for longer runs to prevent bowing and edge dents.
- Protect finishes first. Wrap clad surfaces in non-abrasive paper or foam, add edge protectors, and avoid tapes that can mark brass, bronze, copper, or nickel-silver.
- State it clearly on the BOL: NMFC 137800, Moldings (non-ferrous or brass/bronze/copper/nickel-silver clad wood), Class 85, and note box or crate count.
- Brace inside the box or crate to stop slide and rattle, load on edge where possible, and avoid mixing with iron/steel parts to reduce reclass and abrasion risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass disputes for decorative metal and clad-wood moldings.
- Boxed or crated packing lowers damage risk on high-finish trim, cutting claims and reships on multi-stop LTL moves.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering with no HazMat paperwork.
- Clear item coverage for non-ferrous metal or brass/bronze/copper/nickel-silver clad wood consolidates SKUs under one NMFC, saving rating time.
