How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select “boxes” or “crates” in your TMS and note NMFC 138160, Class 70 on the BOL; this item is fixed class, so no density calculation is needed.
- Use a rigid crate for heavy-wall mold pipes to prevent ovality; add end caps, internal blocking, and cross-braces so the pipe cannot roll or shift.
- Keep lift points in mind: attach skid runners under the box/crate for forklift access, mark center of gravity, and label “Do Not Tip” on longer sections.
- For foundry or mill shipments, bundle by job lot (e.g., two 36-inch sleeves per crate), add corner protectors under steel straps, and photograph packing before tender.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Class 70 simplifies quoting and avoids density reclass charges for boxed or crated steel mold pipe.
- Lower damage risk: crate-ready guidance reduces OS&D claims, protecting high-value centrifugal casting sleeves and minimizing production downtime.
- Faster approvals: clear NMFC item usage accelerates carrier acceptance and shortens time-to-pickup for LTL lanes.
- Cost control: standardized packaging and fixed class enable better rate shopping across carriers and more accurate landed cost forecasts.
