How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Palletize boxed mulch on 48x40 pallets, keep cartons flush with deck, and limit total height to maintain stack stability; use stretch wrap, corner boards, and two poly straps.
- Control moisture: line each box with plastic, tape seams, and place an absorbent sheet on the pallet to prevent staining from damp mulch; avoid outdoor staging before pickup.
- List “Mulch, horticultural or landscaping – NMFC 138720, Class 70” on the BOL; include carton count per pallet and total weight for quick, dispute-free rating.
- Allow safe handling: use four-way pallets, avoid overfilling boxes (mulch settles), and mark pallets stackable only if packaging can support top load.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 delivers predictable LTL pricing and avoids density disputes, improving quote accuracy and budgeting.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and eliminates hazmat fees, speeding tender and pickup scheduling.
- Boxed presentation reduces spill and cleanup claims compared with loose or bagged product, protecting margins.
- Standardized class and packaging streamline seasonal replenishment for garden centers, landscapers, and municipalities, enabling efficient consolidation.
