Notes
Note 138941: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment that the actual value of each article does not exceed $2.00. If the shipper fails to so certify the actual value, sub 2 of the item will apply.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity on the BOL as “music boxes or music box movements, packaged in boxes,” and note materials (wood, metal, plastic) plus units per carton.
- Use double-wall cartons with foam or molded inserts to immobilize mechanisms; wrap cranks and glass domes separately and bag loose screws to prevent abrasion.
- For many small cartons, overbox into a master carton or load into a corrugated gaylord on a pallet; add corner boards, stretch-wrap, and orientation arrows.
- Choose gentle-handling carriers; request do-not-stack cones if needed, and label cartons with NMFC 138940 and Non-Hazmat. Capture exact dims and weight for rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Clear, item-specific descriptions reduce reclass fees and speed up quote responses.
- Shock- and vibration-minded packing cuts gear and comb damage, lowering claims costs.
- Consolidating small boxes on pallets reduces loss risk and minimizes cubic charge exposure.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies routing and avoids hazmat surcharges for faster tendering.
