How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density before quoting: weigh the full pack (case, stands, pedals) and divide by cubic feet. Example: 120 lb keyboard in a 24×20×16 box ≈ 4.44 cu ft → ~27 pcf.
  2. Match packaging to the item type. Boxes suit accordions, cymbals, harmonicas, and strings; use approved packages 2061, 2100, 2124, or 2214 for keyboards/synths; crate or approved packages for organs and pianos to limit damage.
  3. Separate delicate hardware from the main instrument when possible. Drum hardware or piano/organ hardware boxed on their own often packs denser and travels safer.
  4. Verify if a named item has a specific note. Full drum sets may reference item 139023; pianos and organs have allowed crate/package options. Declare as non-hazardous and note “Fragile – Musical Instrument.”

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Right-size class with accurate density to avoid reclass fees and surprise accessorials—critical for bulky pianos/organs and odd-shaped drum kits.
  • Optimized packaging reduces claims. Crating high-value instruments can raise cube but lowers total cost of risk across tours, rentals, and school district shipments.
  • Using approved NMFC packages streamlines carrier acceptance and cuts handling time, improving on-time performance for venues and backline providers.
  • One item number covering many instruments and parts simplifies quoting and inventory logistics for retailers, rental houses, repair shops, and distributors.
