How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 139900 and Class 70 on the BOL, and spell out the packaging (e.g., 6 corrugated boxes, 2,400 lb gross) for quick carrier acceptance.
- For boxes or bagged matte, palletize on a 48x40, use corner boards, stretch‑wrap thoroughly, and add two steel or heavy poly straps to control heavy load shift.
- When shipping drums, keep closures upright, secure with drum rings, and block and brace to prevent rolling; avoid pallet overhang due to high unit weight.
- Limit dust and moisture exposure: cap box tops with fiberboard sheets, use poly liners inside boxes or bags, and request no food co‑loading if customer requires.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and eliminates density disputes, reducing costly reclass and inspection fees.
- Nonhazardous designation broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, trimming total landed cost.
- Rigid packaging (boxes/drums) plus proper unitization cuts damage risk on dense, heavy pieces, lowering claims and delays.
- Clear NMFC coding speeds dock handling and can improve pickup reliability on metal and mining supply lanes.
