NMFC Description Class

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Wrap every coil or reel completely in plastic or fiberboard before tendering; add edge guards and inner-core plugs to prevent telescoping during LTL handling.
  2. Unitize on a sturdy pallet with two-way or four-way entry, then steel- or poly-strap through the core and around the pallet to stop roll-off and shifting.
  3. Label each package with NMFC 139980, item description, piece count, and gross weight; keep the BOL consistent so carriers bill Class 85 without reclass.
  4. For corrosion-sensitive applications, add VCI film under the outer wrap; keep moisture barriers intact and avoid top-loading on lighter-gauge reels.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 85 rating simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing unexpected reclass fees.
  • Nonhazardous designation eliminates hazmat surcharges and documentation overhead for nickel wire shipments.
  • Meeting the “must be wrapped” requirement lowers OS&D risk and claim costs by protecting coil edges and reel flanges.
  • Consistent NMFC mapping across nickel and nickel alloy wire streamlines multi-location shipping playbooks and speeds tendering.
