Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
140700.00 NICKEL-SILVER:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the product form—sheet, bar, rod, coil, or cast parts—and note sizes, thickness, and total weight to support carrier classification when class is N/A.
  2. Protect the finish: interleave sheets with poly or VCI paper, add edge guards, and band firmly to a hardwood or 4‑way pallet; crate delicate or polished pieces.
  3. Balance the load for forklifts. Keep bundles square, use at least two steel or heavy poly straps per side, and block/brace inside crates to prevent shifting.
  4. Label clearly: “Nickel‑Silver Alloy – Non‑Hazardous,” include piece count and dimensions. Example: 48×96 sheet bundle, 1,850 lb, banded and crated.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate item detail and packaging reduce reweigh/reclass charges when the NMFC class is not assigned.
  • Finish protection minimizes scratches and tarnish, cutting quality claims for musical hardware, decorative trim, and precision parts.
  • Dense, well-bundled pallets improve handling efficiency and can lower LTL rates by avoiding oversized or loose‑freight fees.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving routing speed and service reliability.
