How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify density at the handling unit level. Calculate lb/ft3 from total weight and cubic feet; example: 1,100 lb on 44x48x24 in (~29.3 ft3) = ~37.5 lb/ft3, qualifying at Class 60.
- Package castings/forgings in sturdy crates or palletized boxes. Use separators or VCI paper to prevent metal-to-metal abrasion and protect machined faces and edges.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 140720 – Nickel-Silver Castings/Forgings, NOI – Class 60,” include piece count, gross weight, and density calculation to avoid reclass.
- Design for safe handling: band to pallets, add corner boards and top caps, mark center of gravity, and keep each package within forklift-friendly limits for LTL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 60 for dense nickel-silver parts helps secure competitive LTL rates, lowering cost per pound for foundries, machine shops, and OEMs.
- Meeting the ≥30 lb/ft3 threshold reduces inspection disputes and reclass fees, improving quote accuracy and protecting margins.
- NOI coverage lets you consolidate mixed cast and forged shapes under one item, simplifying catalogs and speeding up tendering.
- Proper packaging and documentation reduce damage claims and delays, keeping production lines supplied and customer deliveries on schedule.
